Although much art during this period in history has been created to shock the viewer with either disturbing images or seemingly illogical ones (which can be intriguing), my personal challenge has been to infuse my work with meaning through metaphorical images organized into a strong composition. Light, color, form, space, and texture are utilize to take the viewer into the possibilities of the beyond. Going beyond to another place or time has been an ongoing theme in my work for years; beyond the window, beyond the forest, even beyond death. My current works takes this concept to “Beyond Words.”
My premise is that man’s perceptions and knowledge of our world are based on two things; the words that are passed from person to person and generation to generation and the actual physical world . Words change according to individual perceptions, experiences and needs. The physical world is more of a constant. Thread and fabric have become my metaphorical images for words (story). Water is my metaphorical image for the physical world (reality).
Initially my focus was on the negative aspects of how words alter our perceived world for self centered gain. More recently I have also embraced the positive aspects of story to provide structure for our survival. My primary goal is to enhance our awareness to the fact that story and reality are not the same thing and that we should be forever vigilant in attempting to recognize the difference.
